Getting to the Bottom of Things

It looks I have discovered the cause for the sleep diversion, and once again, I blame it all on the yucky formula (and the introduction of solid foods). It turns out that Ada has been having a little tummy trouble, and it has been a rough day for all involved. However, I think she is on the road to recovery thanks to mineral oil and prune juice, and bless her little heart, she has been sleeping all day. I am doing my best to keep her awake between naps because I don't want to mess up the nighttime schedule, but she can barely keep her eyes open, so she is currently down for her third nap of the day after only being awake for 45 minutes. Progress was made last night, however, and, hallelujah, Ada slept from 9:00 pm to 6:40 am. I realize that this does not guarantee anything, but my fingers are crossed that the problem will soon be solved once the mineral oil works its magic, and we may all be rested again.

Yay for sleep. Poor Ada and poor you :) Wow being a mom really sounds like such hard work. I hadn't really thought too much about it until you had Ada. Hearing all your stories has opened my eyes. When I have a little one, I am going to call you for encouragement! You are a great mom Love you!

By the way...I was in my car going to Target last night and saw this adorable little girl holding her mom's hand. I thought to myself..."she walks like her mom" and "has the prettiest long blond hair" Then I got closer and realized it was Ann with both the kids. How funny and random!

Baby and child development is better thought of as a spiral sort of progression instead of a straight, steady progression. It's normal--and actually good--that her body is alerting her (and you) to changes in her growth and development.

The growth of a baby's brain is fastest in the first two years (counting from conception.) The vast amount of calories needed for that--even when an infant is has been on a regular routine and seems to be getting plenty of nutrition during the day--any spurts in growth can require extra feedings (even the middle-of-the-night ones.)

She's only five months old. She's in store for several more growth spurts this year. I found that just going with the flow, making sure my little ones who woke up got a warm belly of milk and some cuddling, and tucking them back in bed was what was needed for them and easiest for me. Adapting to that for a couple of nights (or even couple of weeks) isn't going to ruin a baby for sleeping through the night--as much as we might fear it!

Best wishes!

Tulipgirl--thanks for stopping by, and thanks for the encouraging words. One thing I have learned about motherhood is that I want to be in control but that is an impossible thing!! I am looking for easy answers, or even hard answers that work:) Motherhood seems to be all about adjustment. Keep the advice coming!!
