Ada had her very first sick pediatrician appointment today. And she was not too happy about it. If you will recall, our last well visit did not go so well. Ada was terrified of everything. Well, I am convinced that Ada remembered the doctor because as soon as he walked into the room today, Ada began to absolutely flip out. Flip out. She grabbed onto my shirt so tightly, that Scott had to peel her off of me. She needed to lie down on the table for him to check her ears, nose, and throat. In the midst of her screaming, she kept shaking her head saying no, a word that she knows so well. Fairly quickly, I was able to pick her up and hold her for the rest of the examination, but she didn't calm down until we were out of the office. It was not good, and I was so very thankful that today was Scott's work from home day, and he was able to go with us. I needed moral support!
I mentioned that she has had a cold all week, which made for a stressful visit home. She didn't sleep very well at night, and she took very short morning naps. She has stayed in a terrible mood, at times crying for no apparent reason, and I have been unable to comfort her. When this continued this morning, I decided to take her to the doctor for my peace of mind. Sure enough, she has an ear infection, which I think explains the cranky mood. The doctor prescribed ear drops and an antibiotic. Scott and I laughed because the antibiotic had a warning that it would interfere with birth control. I think Ada would have been okay without the warning:) Question for moms out there, will the antibiotic give her a yeast infection? I don't know if it has that affect on 13 month old little girls. I want to be prepared for that, and I wonder if there are ways to prevent that from happening. It will make me so sad if she ends up with a yeast infection. Seriously, mom readers, any advice, previous experience with antibiotics, etc? I will be sure to feed her lots of yogurt just in case.
So...13 months into life, and she is officially sick for the first time. Of course, she has had several colds, but this is the first time she has had to go to the doctor for any reason other than a routine visit. A rite of passage, I suppose.

Good Job LB! I can not believe Ada is 13 months old and just now sick for the first time!! You are a good Mommy! :) Unfortunately Claire struggled with about 6 ear infections her first year of life. With all those antibiotics she never had a yeast infection BUT certain antibiotics (Ceflex in particular) can cause diarrhea. Just keep your eye out for that and if the upset stomach gets really bad, call the doc and he can put her on a different antibiotic. The ear drops will immediately numb the ear and make her feel and sleep a whole lot better. Good luck and hopefully y'all can get some rest!
I wondered if she had one. Did the pediatrician have any idea how long she had had it? Ellie has never had an ear infection, but she has been on antibiotics a few times and never got a yeast infection. But there was also no warning about birth control, so maybe it's a different kind. Poor little Ada! I thought she did pretty well considering that.
with antibiotics in babies -- biggest concern will be diarrhea and dehydration more than anything. just be prepared! :) and keep her hydrated... the tummy upset will pass as soon as the antibiotic is finished...

As Ada's overprotective great aunt, promise me that you will never take Ada to the doctor again if it is going to scare her like that. I'm kidding. I hope she is feeling better. I hope you and Scott have not fallen out on the floor from fatigue.

Whenever Kate takes antibiotics, I make sure and give her yogurt for the bacteria in it since the medicine clears her system of the normal stuff and can make her stomach upset. I get Yo-Baby, but I think anything that has live cultures in it is fine. Hope this helps!
I would give her yogurt. I also give me kids extra yogurt when they have to take antibiotics. In fact I eat a lot of yogurt if I take antibiotcics. I hope she gets better soon.
Hannah reacted THE SAME WAY when she went to the doctor around that age...well...probably every time she's gone come to think of it! We go tomorrow for her check up AND Grant's...I'm hoping she'll be more comfortable...she has a new doctor set so we've been playing with that in hopes of it not being so traumatizing. Poor little Ada...hope she's feeling better soon!!

Just catching up on reading the blogs after settling down after the girls party, but after 4 rounds of antibiotics, no yeast infections. However, the only antibiotic that worked was Augmenten and I will NEVER start with any of the others again. (Omnicef, Rocephin, Amoxicillin). I probably spelled every one of those wrong. If the infection persists and you arent on it, try the augmenten. We made it to 11 months but then we were in the same boat you are in!
