Vacuum Advice, please

Okay, ya'll really came through with advice on what camera to invest in. However, it looks as if that camera is going to be put waaaaay back on the back burner because our poor little pitiful vacuum cleaner has worked itself to death, literally.

We bought the vacuum cleaner when we moved to our second apartment. (our first apartment was tiny and had concrete floors--the dust buster did the trick quite nicely). We were living on a budget with a new baby on the way, and we bought the most decent thing we could find on sale. It has served us as well as it could. And it's cute. A nice lime green. But we think it has breathed it's last breath.

We are still living on a budget, folks, but we desperately need a good vacuum cleaner that doesn't cost every penny of the measly savings that we have managed to gather over the past year. Can you help me?

Last night when I asked Scott to vacuum the living room and he told me that our vacuum no longer worked, I almost cried. Then I asked him how much a good vacuum costs, and he told me $1000. Is that true? Please, friends, tell me we can find a decent one for much less than that.

What do you think? Can you help me? Advise away, please.

Hey LB! I am definitely no cleaning expert, but we LOVE our vacuum, and it only costs about $300. We got it a long, long time ago, and it still works just like new. It's a kenmore canister vacuum from sears, and we have an adorable lime green color too! Here's a link to the type we have:

Good luck!!

Correction! I found our actual vaccuum on sears.com, and it's only 139.00! Here's the updated link:

I don't think a good vacumm cost $1000. The dyson vacs are the most expensive i have seen and they are in the mid 500's. We use the vacumm Taylor's grandmother gave him prior to college. It is nothing special but it works. We use the one with the bags. I think it is less gross than the one that just "whirls" the dirt around in there and you empty it. I felt like those clogged more. Maybe just me.

Hey LB, I don't know of any vacuum cleaner that costs $1000! Burton and I have a high-falutin' Dyson ball vacuum (wedding gift from his parents--he was the one who asked for it b/c I am not one to get excited over vacuums!). It was $400 and was the most expensive vacuum at Macy's and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Can you try Craig's list, or see if maybe family members have extras that they don't need? Truly, I think you should not need to spend anywhere near $1000, especially if you can get a used one (and maybe a spare to keep in reserve).

Blog stalker here :). I recently found a coupon for 30% off anything (and free shipping) at Kohl's and ordered a Dyson online. It arrived promptly and we love it! We have carpet, tile, and wood floors and it works beautifully on all three. Here is the link -- http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/homecare/brandsforhomecare/dyson/PRD~115517/Dyson+DC14+All+Floors+Vacuum.jsp#

We paid a total of $298 or so with the coupon, which I found on retailmenot.com. You are such a great bargain finder, I'm sure you can find one for a good price.

Happy vacuuming!

Sorry, LB, I think Scott may have gotten the $1000.00 amount from me. It's because the super duper ones cost that. The Electrolux that I want costs $1000.00. Steve and Ann have an Oreck which they love and I think you can get one for 300 to 500 and it will do the job. My theory is that even if the vacuum is "working" as in "running" - how much is it actually pulling out of that carpet and who wants to go through the motions if it isn't doing much of a job. But - if ya'll can scrape up 300 to 500 you can probably get a good one. I agree that a Kenmore would probably be good. Oreck is very reputable - there's a store in H'ville. Electroux Vacs are wonderful and there's this other brand that I forget - but love.

My Orek was under $300.00, and I bought it here in Evergreen at South Alabama Gas Co.

I tend to exaggerate. My bad.

But really, why are you listening to me about vacuum cleaner advice?

You don't know me, but I am a devoted follower of your blog. I live in VA where the pollen is OUT OF CONTROL, so I bought a rainbow when I was still working and we had money to burn. Not budget friendly, but let me tell you, I have wall to wall carpet and it is dust free. As are all of my curtains, chairs, sofa, and pillows. And I will LITERALLY never have to buy another one again. Yeah, the dyson's are super nice and reasonably priced, but you know that in five or seven years, it's gonna bust. It just is. The rainbow never will! Anway, if you could see scraping together the money for that in the next few years, I'd just spend a hundred or so now. And don't splurge on a kirby, they're too heavy to drag upstairs!

Best vacuum we've ever had is a Dyson. They are a bit pricey-- we had gift cards left over from our wedding when we bought ours, but hands down it does the best job of any we've owned. I highly recommend it, especially if you plan on owning pets that will be indoors at all. We burned up a vacuum or two with all the pet hair but the Dyson just takes it in stride. Good luck!

We have a Bissell. Less than $100, we've had it three years, with one dog, one cat, and a two year old, and we LOVE it. It has NO FILTER that you have to empty and bang out and get dust everywhere. And it has a HEPA filter in the front.
We went through two Hoovers in two years and finally tried the Bissell, and we won't be going back :)

WalMart, girlfriend, less than $100.

Hey LB - About 6 mos ago, we bought a Hoover tempo vaccuum online from Amazon. I think Lyle paid $69 for it?? Anyway, he did a ton of research beforehand and it works SO much better than our old one. Note - it is one of the old style vaccuums that have a bag, but I actually prefer it because the one we had before got dust everywhere when you emptied the canister. The tempo has crazy powerful suction - my expectations have been far surpassed for the price.

Hey LB!! I have a bagless vacuum and I LOVE it! It was less than $75from walmart- we have had it for 4years, and I have never had any problems with it. Here's the link:

It's an upright Bissell- LOVE, LOVE it! Also, you don't ever have to worry about buying bags. Good luck!

I know I am responding to an old post, but I am behind! LOL Did you decide on a vacuum? We have an ORECK (sp?) and I LOVE it. It was around $300 I think. It only weighs 8 lbs and it is AWESOME! Hope that helps!! My mom got it for us, so thankfully I didn't have to pay the $300. I know how it is to live on a budget and it is so hard! Congratulations on the pregnancy, we are so excited for you!! Love, Stephanie
